The Songs of Ahrens & Flaherty is a showcase of music by the award winning theatrical duo of Lynn Ahrens, the lyricist and Stephen Flaherty, the composer. In this performance at the Hayes Theatre Company’s Cabaret Season, three female and three male singers deliver a diverse range of songs from a variety of Ahrens & Flaherty musicals.

With minimal staging, props and lighting changes, it is the vocal talents of the six performers that carry the show. The voices were beautiful and the character driven songs by far the most worthwhile. Kathleen Amarant does an excellent job of portraying characters who range from a girl who just wants to be funny to a woman who has let love slip through her fingers. Stacey-Louise Camilleri is great on the keys and maintains a relentless energy from the beginning to the end.

The show however does lack context if you don’t know Ahrens & Flaherty and it may take a few songs to become familiar with their style and enjoy the show for what is. If you do know Ahrens & Flaherty, the show provided a wonderful opportunity to watch a group of performers who do them justice and bring their characters to life.
